  • 4-Week Storytelling Programme for Schools

Storyteller Helena Byrne offers a four-week storytelling programme for primary 3rd to 6th classes and secondary school students.

Through a series of four interactive workshops, scheduled over a four-week period approximately, students will be introduced to the art and craft of oral storytelling. These workshops not only offer students the opportunity to develop their writing ability and public speaking skills, but also help them to gain invaluable self-confidence.

Students will learn about:

  • The history of storytelling and it’s significance within Irish culture.
  • Various styles of storytelling around the world.
  • Voice projection, stage performance and acting skills.
  • Character development, use of language,composing your ‘script’ and making the story your own.

On completion of the programme, students are encouraged to present their stories to fellow students and where possible, to family in a public setting. Each student receives a certificate of achievement upon completion of the programme.

We were not only thoroughly entertained but we also learned quite a lot about the significance of folklore to the Irish psyche in days past. Such awareness is even somewhat useful in understanding contemporary Irish culture. She also displayed a beautiful voice as she sang a couple of folk songs for us during the evening.�

This fabulously festive experience is a magical memory for all the family.
Join Helena the Storyteller and Santa Claus for this fun-filled show of stories, games and Christmas songs.

With energetic and interactive Christmas themed storytime, Helena will have children and grown ups on the edge of the seats and up on their feet, all while Santa makes his way from the North Pole with his reindeer. But we won’t have to wait long for his arrival!

Santa Claus will join us for stories, games and a delightful Christmas sing-along! Children will also get the chance to ask Santa a question and make sure their on the nice list!

Such awareness is even somewhat useful in understanding contemporary Irish culture. She also displayed a beautiful voice as she sang a couple of folk songs for us during the evening.�

Storyteller and singer Helena Byrne has worked with numerous age-friendly organizations, social groups and residential care settings over the past number of years to provide wonderful storytelling and music experiences for the older community.

Helena’s storytelling interweaves memories of times past and Irish life in days gone by, with traditional folk songs for all to sing along with. Not only are they encouraged to partake, but Helena rouses conversation with attendees to share stories and reminisce about their younger years. Did you visit the dance halls on a Saturday night? Who was the first house to get a television? Did you sit down to listen to ‘The Kennedys of Castleross’ every week?

The songs Helena performs are thoughtfully chosen, harking back to a classic era; Come Back Paddy Reilly, The Spinning Wheel and Que Sera Sera to name but a few. Music is a powerful way to trigger positive feelings, not only for older people but also for those with dementia.

Helena has also facilitated a number of special projects with older communities including Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council’s ‘Cuairt agus Cultúr’ Programme 2021 and the Stirring Memories – Stories of Yesterday’ Project 2022. She was a recipient of the ‘National Arts in Nursing Homes’ Award 2024, facilitating a storytelling exhibition with residents of Ashbury Nursing Home, Dublin. She is currently collecting stories from older women in county Kilkenny for a new heritage project called ‘Mná Feasa/Wise Women’, which is due to be published in late 2024.

Such awareness is even somewhat useful in understanding contemporary Irish culture. She also displayed a beautiful voice as she sang a couple of folk songs for us during the evening.�

�I hired Helena Byrne to perform for just under 100 people at an international conference in Trinity College, and she captivated every single person with her wonderful songs and stories. Helena not only has an incredible voice (and really knows how to use it) but she is also very pleasant to work with and highly professional. Next time I organise something similar, Helena is sure to be on the programme again.�

�Helena came to our school to do a workshop with 3 classes during literacy week. The workshops were a huge success. The children were so engaged and eager to participate. There was storytelling, drama, singing and creativity across the classes and Helena was a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend Helena for school workshops and we will certainly invite her back again soon.�

In addition to the stories themselves, she mixed into her narrative an explanation of how folklore was a critical aspect of expression in the Irish experience therefore suggesting the importance it held in appreciating Irish culture. We were not only thoroughly entertained but we also learned quite a lot about the significance of folklore to the Irish psyche in days past. Such awareness is even somewhat useful in understanding contemporary Irish culture. She also displayed a beautiful voice as she sang a couple of folk songs for us during the evening.�
