Storyteller Helena Byrne offers a four-week storytelling programme for primary 3rd to 6th classes and secondary school students.
Through a series of four interactive workshops, scheduled over a four-week period approximately, students will be introduced to the art and craft of oral storytelling. These workshops not only offer students the opportunity to develop their writing ability and public speaking skills, but also help them to gain invaluable self-confidence.
Students will learn about:
- The history of storytelling and it’s significance within Irish culture.
- Various styles of storytelling around the world.
- Voice projection, stage performance and acting skills.
- Character development, use of language, composing your ‘script’ and making the story your own.
On completion of the programme, students are encouraged to present their stories to fellow students and where possible, to family in a public setting. Each student receives a certificate of achievement upon completion of the programme.
“Helena worked with our school to create an exhibition of stories “The Magic of Local Lore” which was displayed in the local library. The project was hugely popular with the class and the local community.
The children benefitted immensely from Helena’s support in the process. She engaged with the class in a truly meaningful way. They were given the opportunity to see a master seanchaí at work, and she definitely captured their imaginations. The children came away with a new appreciation for the power of storytelling, and thanks to Helena’s expert guidance throughout the process, more confidence in their own storytelling abilities.
It was a rewarding experience as a class teacher that I would recommend to any school.” – Louise Jordan, Presentation Primary School, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny
Helena has brought her workshops to primary schools across Ireland, as well as elementary schools in the USA and international schools on continental Europe.
Helena is the most engaging guest I have ever welcomed into my school library! My students of all ages (4 years to 12 years), as well as the teachers and staff of my school, were so positively impacted by her stories, performances, and songs! She is energetic and enigmatic! Every student was engaged all day for two days. Every adult fell in love with her. We laughed, we cried, we sang, we performed movement exercises, we were spooked. Her mesmerizing stories and songs left our school captivated for weeks!! We cannot wait to invite her back in the Spring!! Over 5 stars if I could. 😀 – Sembach Elementary School, Sembach, Germany
“Helena made a recent visit to my junior infant class. The children were engaged from the first minute of the visit. They thoroughly enjoyed getting involved in the stories. Helena’s pacing was excellent, she knew when to move on, when to get the children moving and how to manage the group. I would highly recommend her as fantastic experience for a class.” – Victoria Stewart, Monkstown Educate Together, Dublin
“Ms Byrne participated in the Kids Euro Festival at the Embassy of Ireland in Washington DC… She is a gifted storyteller, performer & singer, bringing to life Irish folklore & culture interwoven with Traditional Irish songs. The audiences at the embassy, young & old alike, were very impressed with Ms. Byrne’s performances & storytelling.” – Daniel Mulhall, Ambassador of Ireland to the USA, 2017-2022
